Charity Challenge 2021 - Week 3 Night 1

And. We. Are. Back! We’re back for Week 3 of the Charity Challenge, raising money for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. Big thank you to Matt who brings our donation total up to $255 of our $600 goal! If you’d like to donate in support you can do so at this link.

After the super long update last time around I’ll keep it short and get right into the game for this week to get us started…

The Choice

To remind us where we’re sitting: Rachel has won 6 nights in a row and clean swept week 2. This is a record breaking run and my goal tonight is to pick a game where I’m feeling super confident I can stop the slide.

Tonight I’m going to pick a game I’ve played quite a bit and have played a bit online in recent months online. Tonight we’ll be playing Azul!

The Game

Azul is one of those hobby games that has made its way into the mainstream. In the US you can find the game in Target or Walmart and it’s becoming one of those ubiquitous games that transcends the more hardcore hobby gamers. I’ll leave the explanation to the publisher’s official blurb, which does a pretty good job of explaining the game:

In the game Azul, players take turns drafting colored tiles from suppliers to their player board. Later in the round, players score points based on how they’ve placed their tiles to decorate the palace. Extra points are scored for specific patterns and completing sets; wasted supplies harm the player’s score. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

The Result

We were playing a best of 3 for this and Rachel sat down and said “you’ll only need 2 games to win this” and so it was. For whatever reason this puzzle clicks more with my brain or more likely, just doesn’t click with Rachel’s brain.

The first game was close but the second game was a run away success for me, I doubled Rachel’s score despite having a round where I took quite a few negative points.

So there we go! I’ve managed to stop the slide and snap the streak. Hopefully I can build from this and fight back stronger this week.
