Charity Challenge - Week 1 Night 5

We’ve reached the end of the first of five weeks in the O’Sullivan Charity Challenge! Thank you everyone who has donated, followed along, and cheered us on throughout this first week.

Just a reminder that all month Rachel and I are raising money for CAMH – The Center for Addiction and Mental Health. If you’d like to learn more or donate you can do so here.

Let’s close out the week shall we!

The Choice

I’ve managed to fight back and given myself a chance to close out this week. That means that Rachel now has the ball in her court as we go into the final night of a 2-2 week one tie.

Rachel’s rationale tonight is that it’s early and worst case if she loses, it’s all good. So Rachel has called a Charity Challenge classic that we’re 50/50 on in terms of win percentage. Tonight we’ll be playing 7 Wonders Duel!

The Game

7 Wonders Duel is the two player re-implementation of the very popular 7 Wonders, a drafting game where you pick cards to build out a civilization from resources, to commerce, to science and military.  In 7 Wonders Duel two players take turns picking cards from a structured pyramid to build their civilization.  Some cards give you resources, some cards give you science, or military and some give you economic advantages.  There are three ways to win:  by having the most points at the end of the game OR collecting 6 different sciences (the game ends immediately when you collect a sixth science breakthrough) OR militarily by defeating your foe (if your military grows a certain strength beyond your opponent the game ends immediately).

There’s a lot going on in this fantastic two player package.  If you’d like to learn more please check out this excellent video from PEI’s Rodney Smith.

The Result

This was a worthy end of week decider. On the board it looked like I had a huge lead – I had almost 40 points in civilization cards, easily the most I’ve ever had. This year, unlike previous years, Rachel wasn’t able to sneak in a science or military victory, in fact, I kept the military pressure on Rachel throughout the game.

But all of my strength, and this was probably one of the best games of 7WD I’ve ever played, wasn’t enough in the end. Rachel was able to be consistent across the board and managed to just squeak past me. Rachel won the week with a 7WD final score of 71 to 68. I wish we had video recorded this, the tension was real.

So that’s it for week 1! Rachel takes the lead and we’ll be back tomorrow to kick off week 2.
